£100m Newport shopping mall to spawn slew of kitchen work

T.G.I. Friday’s today become the 10th restaurant brand to commit to space in a £100m shopping centre opening in Newport later this year.

The American-themed chain joins the likes of Prezzo, Le Bistrot Pierre, Nando’s, Las Iguanas, GBK and Loungers in securing a unit in the leisure section of Friars Walk.

Catering equipment suppliers and contractors are primed for a rush of orders as the leading chains prepare to fit out their sites before the venue opens in November.

T.G.I. Friday’s is already present in South Wales through two existing restaurants in Cardiff, but this is its first branch in Newport.

David Carroll, property director of TGI Friday’s UK, said: “We are delighted to be bringing the TGI Friday’s unique experience to the outstanding Friars Walk retail and leisure development in the heart of Newport.”

It has taken just four years to develop the Friars Walk concept, secure funding, establish the right tenant mix and build the scheme.

The venue is currently 65% let and is earmarked to be one of only three shopping centres forecasted to open in the UK in 2015.

Stuart Harris, commercial director and co-founder of Queensberry Real Estate, the company behind the mall, said: “TGI’s is another great brand to add to our mix of restaurant options at Friars Walk, we now truly have something to suit all tastes.

“The quality of restaurants in combination with the retail and leisure offer at both Friars Walk and nearby will offer everyone leisure choices throughout the whole day and evening in a fantastic new modern environment.”

Major national restaurant group Las Iguanas is taking a 4,000 square foot unit at the mall. It will become its 40th outlet in the UK and the group’s first in Newport.

Mos Shamel, Las Iguanas’ managing director, said: “The transformation of Newport is already well underway and we are excited by the opportunity presented by this scheme. We already have two highly successful restaurants in Cardiff and with plans to also open in Swansea in the spring, our new Friars Walk restaurant will be another fantastic addition to the growing Las Iguanas portfolio.”
