The company known as Manitowoc Foodservice until March 2017 had another solid year in 2016, with both top and bottom line growth cementing its status as one of the most powerful suppliers in the UK.

Guildford-based Welbilt specialises in the manufacture, sale and aftermarket support of commercial catering equipment, including kit brought in from other members of the worldwide group.

Hardware from brands such as Convotherm, Frymaster and Garland is a common sight in professional kitchens around the UK, while Merrychef ovens, which are produced in Sheffield, rank as one of the group’s outstanding success stories.

Pre-tax profits at Welbilt UK rose from £7.6m to £9.8m during the course of last year as sales jumped from £69.2m to £77.1m.

In their review of the business, the directors of the company said that it benefitted from both organic growth and roll-out expansion by major food chains together with continued investment in new products.

“The business and financial climate remain uncertain in certain sectors and regions but the directors, having reviewed their business plan, are confident of continued progress,” they stated.

The 11% growth in sales (compared to a 4% decline the year before), along with a four percentage-point rise in gross margin and a two percentage-point increase in operating margin were all KPIs that the directors said reflected the progress of the business.
