This year Pret will open at least 32 stores in the UK and possibly a dozen more overseas.
It will be a record roll-out programme for the chain and, coming off the back of the 36 stores it launched globally last year, supports a strategy to increase the size of its estate by around 10% each year.
The British sandwich chain serves 300,000 customers every day and made profits of £84m on sales of £676m in its last full financial year, making it one of the true foodservice titans of the UK high street.
While some of its competitors have fallen by the wayside over the years, affable CEO Clive Schlee has created a culture whereby the 400-strong chain never stops looking at how it can evolve its concept. He has just signed off on the opening of Pret’s first motorway service shop, at South Mimms, as part of a trial partnership with Welcome Break, with the site producing fresh food from its own kitchen on the premises.
But the most significant development — and one that could have a huge impact on the direction of the business — is the conversion of a London vegetarian pop-up store into a permanent fixture after its initial success. It is now looking at further sites. “I hope we can bring Veggie Pret to more cities in due course,” says Clive.
