Thai restaurant chain Giggling Squid has blinged up the kitchen at its newest site in Billericay after equipment delivery issues led to it installing a ‘gold-plated’ refrigeration cabinet.
A shortage of industrial kitchen equipment parts caused by a combination of disruption to Channel Tunnel services and staff holidays, meant its supplier was unable to deliver a top-of-the range refrigerated food storage and preparation unit in time for the opening at the end of August, which was fully booked well ahead of the launch date.
To resolve the problem, refrigeration equipment manufacturer, Gram Commercial, offered to lend the Essex restaurant its unique gold ‘Gastro K1807’, which was created to celebrate the Kent-based outfit’s 50th anniversary.
The Gastro K1870 is designed for use as an island suite, placed against a wall or under an existing worktop and can be customised with saladette worktops with splashback, insulated or acrylic lids and a gantry.
The version loaned to Giggling Squid was ‘sexed up’ by Norwich-based Totally Dynamic, who usually custom wrap sports cars and speed boats for product launches and livered fleet vehicles.
Non-blinged versions of the counter have a list price of £4,375 plus VAT. The loan item is worth considerably more and is being protected by 24-hour security until a new unit can be supplied.
“All our dishes are created onsite using fresh ingredients, so these chilled cabinets, which also serve as a food preparation surface are a vital piece of kit for our chefs,” said restaurant co-owner Andy Laurillard.
Giggling Squid has invested more than £50,000 transforming the 120-seater former Cleaver chicken, ribs and burger restaurant, creating 20 new jobs in the process.
The chain, which opened its first restaurant in 2009 in Hove, has established a strong reputation for its authentic, rustic and fresh Thai cooking with the emphasis on coastal specialities.
