Foodservice ‘slowdown’ only temporary, new stats reveal

A slowdown in the foodservice market during the first quarter of 2015 was only temporary, with new figures suggesting consumer confidence remains positive.

According to the NPD Group, total sector growth reached 1.4% year-on-year during the second quarter, well above the +0.6% experienced in the first quarter of this year.

The growth was fuelled by the strong performance of major brands (3.6% traffic growth), while small chains and independents continued their traffic decreases (-1.7%).

The traffic boost was seen amongst all sectors except on-site, which saw visit declines of -0.8% compared to the same quarter last year.

QSR remained the strongest performer, recording a strong 3.2% growth in total spend and 2.1% traffic growth.

British consumers ate out of home more often during each month of the first half of 2015 than they did in the same period last year and in 2013, NPD also revealed.
