Jamie Oliver’s parents seeking to install pizza oven

Jamie Oliver’s parents have applied for permission to install a pizza oven at their Essex pub in a bid to boost a fall in takings.

Sally and Trevor Oliver, who have run the Cricketers pub in Clavering for almost 40 years, are waiting on Uttlesford District Council to approve plans for a pizza oven in a purpose-built addition at the rear of the pub.

The couple applied for a retrospective planning application for an outside wood-burning oven three years ago, but it was refused by the council.

However, a year later they went back with a new proposal to place a pizza oven in a detached, open-sided building at the front of the pub, which was given the green light.

According to local press reports, the Olivers submitted a fresh request this month to site the oven in a purpose-built addition adjacent to the existing kitchens as the original site they gained permission for raised issues with the car park and customer safety.

Celebrity son Jamie operates a business that acts as the sole importer of Valoriani wood burning pizza ovens in the UK. It is not known if this is the brand of oven the Olivers intend to install.

On his website, Oliver says about the Valoriani brand: “These ovens really get people’s imaginations going. They are brilliant tools for inspiring good times around the table. To my mind, wood fired ovens are the ultimate foodie must-have”

In the latest planning application, the Olivers state that offering freshly cooked pizzas is a “natural extension” of their lunch and evening meals.

They also reveal that takings have consistently fallen since 2010, including by up to 18% in some months.

The pair, who employ 60 staff, believe the pizza oven will help to increase revenues, which in turn would prevent them having to make any redundancies.

“There would be benefits to the community in providing additional facilities for visitors, customers and village residents which would support local services,” said the application. “The local economy would continue form the provision of this additional facility and to maintain the current levels of service and employment.”

Celebrity chef son Jamie cut his teeth in the pub kitchen at The Cricketers and has a home nearby.
