With more than a decade at the helm, Martin Shuker has seen the UK fast food sector explode before his eyes but his company has embraced, rather than shirked, the challenge of defending its market share.
The size of the business is startling: KFC, though its 800-plus stores, did £1 billion of sales in the UK last year, while Martin has gone on record as saying that it is aiming to add another £500m to that figure by 2020.
To do that it plans to smash through the 1,000 store mark and widen the breadth of its menu with additional food and beverage ranges. Its offering has already evolved considerably to include healthier products, rice boxes and non-fried, pulled chicken, while a huge store re-design last year saw the introduction of new interiors, complete with semi-open kitchens allowing customers to see their food being prepared.
Under Martin, KFC has become one of the first in its sector to pioneer a Degree Apprenticeship programme in conjunction with De Montfort University in Leicester. Team members, who work full time while studying, receive a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Management, as well as Chartered Manager status from the Chartered Management Institute, upon completion of the free four-year course.
