Restaurant chain MEATliquor has offered ex-Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw a job as its ‘Chief Pie Eater’ following his exit from the club yesterday.
Shaw resigned after becoming caught up in a betting scandal when he was comically filmed devouring a pie in the second half of the club’s televised FA Cup match against Arsenal on Monday.
It is understood that bookmakers had offered odds of 8/1 that the 23-stone keeper would be caught on camera eating a pie during the game.
But it looks like he won’t be unemployed for long after MEATliquor officially offered him the “bespoke” role of Chief Pie Eater.
The company, which operates more than a dozen restaurants, tweeted Shaw, saying: “Please can you DM us your email? We would like to offer you a job as our Chief Pie Eater. Genuine offer.”
This morning the chain confirmed that the offer was real and that the job, “which is to be defined in partnership with Shaw”, involves daily duties of eating the full array of new menu items. This will range from pies to variations on the classic cheese and chicken burger, to wings, fries and desserts before officially being listed on MEATliquor menus nationwide.
Scott Collins, co-founder of MEATliquor, said: “The highlight of this year’s FA cup has not been on the pitch, it’s been in the heart of the Sutton dug-out. So, impressed by Mr Shaw’s appetite for pasties and pies, combined with the fact he is now out of a job, his level of knowledge as to what makes good tasty food is something that just couldn’t see go to waste and would like to offer him a job as our newly created Chief Pie Eater. We are awaiting an official response, but on behalf of everyone at MEATliquor – we really hope he accepts.”
