The winners of the first Café Quality Food and Drink Awards have been announced with a supermarket walking off with the top café prize.

Morrisons ‘The Café’ has won National Café Chain of the Year with judges praising its unique and creative approach.

Wyevale Garden Centres – Coffee Ground – won the Regional Café Chain of the Year award because of solid branding and well positioned marketing of its food.

Picnic Cornwall in Falmouth won the Independent Café of the Year.

The awards were open to all National, Regional and independent cafés, and are designed to recognise the increasing demand for quality at affordable prices in the retail and catering channels.

Judging took place at the University of West London in August and was based on the credibility, transparency and robustness of the process originated by the Quality Food Awards, now in its 36th year.

The awards are organised by Metropolis Business Media.

Metropolis group publisher, Helen Lyons, said: “This has been an inspiring new arena for us and the quality of the entries have been absolutely amazing. We are very proud of all our winners and finalists who have set such high standards in this rapidly growing industry. What sets us apart is the impartiality and rigour of the judging process, which rightly sits at the heart of everything we do – it means people buying products with the ‘Q’ mark know they are choosing the best in the market.”
