The ninth outlet in the Subway/Compass Group partnership has opened at University Hospital Southampton.

A spokesman for Subway says the move underpins the Subway brand’s commitment to providing nutritious, fresh and convenient food options.

“It is a committed partner to the UK Government’s Public Health Responsibility Deal and the only quick service restaurant to have endorsed eight nutrition-related pledges.”

Eight stores are already in operation in Compass Group UK & Ireland managed hospitals and universities throughout the UK, including Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, Middlesex University and The University of Derby.

There are currently more than 650 Subway open in what the company refers to as “non-traditional” locations, such as within convenience stores, forecourt sites, hospitals, universities or transport hubs.

The Subway brand remains the world’s largest specialist sandwich provider with more than 44,000 stores worldwide, including more than 2,300 stores in the UK and Ireland.

Greg Madigan, area development manager for the Subway brand in the UK and Ireland, said: “The Subway brand partnership with Compass Group UK & Ireland is going from strength to strength.

“It is great to see the new store open at University Hospital Southampton, increasing Compass Group’s number of Subway and further growing our portfolio of stores in healthcare environments.

“Non-traditional locations are a key area of growth for the Subway brand – the simple operations involved in running a store and the convenience offer make it a perfect fit for these style locations.”

Steve Cenci, managing director of healthcare at Compass Group UK & Ireland, commented: “We are delighted to bring a Subway store to University Hospital Southampton as part of our commitment to bring leading facilities to patients, staff and visitors at the hospital.

“Our feedback has shown that people welcome the familiarity of brands in a healthcare setting. Having a partner that is signed up to the UK’s Government’s Public Health Responsibility Deal and is delivering on the eight nutrition related pledges, ensures we are able to bring healthy choices to our customers.”
