Unified brewery group increases kitchen focus

The Liberation Group has set out a plan for developing its food-led offering following the acquisition a rival independent brewery company that takes the number of pubs, bars and eateries it owns to 90.

The company will use the takeover of Butcombe Brewery to refresh the food offering within the group and expand the portfolio of food-led managed and high quality tenanted pubs.

Mark Crowther, chief executive of Liberation Group, said the company has been looking for some time for the right UK business to acquire as part of its longer-term growth strategy.

“This marks the start of the exciting next chapter for Liberation and Butcombe, both of whom share the same passion for quality beers and great pubs. The enlarged group provides the perfect bridge head platform for further future growth in the UK market.”

The Liberation Group operates an award-winning collection of 75 pubs and eateries in the Channel Islands. It was formed in 2008 following a MBO backed by Legal & General Capital, through LGV Capital supporting a management team led by Crowther.

Butcombe Brewery was founded in 1978 and is the leading brewer and pub operator in Somerset, Bristol, Bath, the Mendips and the Cotswolds. It owns 19 managed pubs and a brewery.
