Water-saving kitchen earns Marriott Heathrow green hotelier title

The London Heathrow Marriott Hotel has been announced as the European winner of the prestigious ‘Green Hotelier Award 2016’, thanks in no small part to its investment in warewashing equipment.

Beating competition from a variety of hotel companies, the property was judged the greenest hotel in Europe for innovating and investing in new technology to improve its sustainability and reduce its consumption footprint.

One major contributor to the win was an impressive 92% and two million litre water savings annually in the kitchen due to the installation of a Granuldisk pot and pan washing machine that eliminates any need for pre-washing.

“A Granuldisk machine offers a great solution for a cleaner and improved work environment,” said Sean Kelly, senior executive chef Europe at Marriott Hotels. “It offers water, chemical and energy savings.”

Sustainability has always been a focus from Marriott International, which has set clear goals on saving energy, reducing water and using sustainable resources.

Jim Shields, director of engineering at Marriott Hotels, added: “Once I learnt some of the benefits of the Granuldisk equipment, with the potential energy and water savings as well as the process improvements, it made a lot of sense having a truly efficient utensil washer.”

Granuldisk’s pot washing machines use PowerGranules, water and a small amount of detergent to mechanically scrub pots and pans clean. The blasting power combined with high temperatures washes hygienically clean in a matter of minutes, using up to 90% less water, energy and chemicals than any other pot washing methods, according to the company.
