A Belfast branch of Caffe Nero is undergoing a store refurbishment just weeks after rats were filmed scampering over catering equipment inside.

The rodents were recorded as they scurried over the counter in a video that went viral on social media.

The footage was filmed in July by a couple who saw something out of the corner of their eye as they walked past store in the early hours of the morning.

They saw two rats climb up the counter in the store and behind the coffee machine.

The Belfast Telegraph said the outlet would remain closed for five weeks while the refurbishment takes place.

A spokesman for Caffe Nero told the paper: “I can confirm that the store is being refurbished. At the moment Caffe Nero is unable to confirm an exact opening date.”

Caffe Nero is the third largest coffee chain in the UK, with close to 600 stores.
