Catering equipment distributor steps up to gruelling charity challenge

Peak District

A team of seven from catering equipment distributor GastroNorth/Upnorth Group undertook the Northumberland Coast Mighty Hike in support of Macmillan over the weekend.

GastroNorth director Tim Whitfield completed the challenge last year in memory of his mother, prompting more of the team to join the charity event this year.

Fellow director Richard Toye reported: “Tim and a group of his friends completed the Mighty Hike in aid of Macmillan last year. It was a gruelling challenge and raised money for a fantastic cause which unfortunately and no doubt most of us or our family will regrettably need the support of during our lives.

“Our team of 7, called The Red Hot Chili Steppers, from GastroNorth and Upnorth Group core accounts decided to join Tim this year.”

The team comprised Toye, Whitfield, office manager Tracy Toye, design engineer Liam Simpson, field sales executive Neil Anderson, company secretary and group finance director Vickie Grierson and group senior accountant Mandy Walker.

They took part in the approximately 26-mile hike along the Northumberland coast from Alnwick Castle to Bamburgh Castle.

The action began at 6am to get to Bamburgh for the 8.30am start at Alnwick. The GastroNorth team completed the hike with a couple of short refreshment breaks along the north east coastline, taking in some of Britain’s best castles and views on the way.

Mr Toye commented: “We all have had support from Macmillan at some point and felt it was good way to both honour our beloved ones whom we all dearly miss so much and support the charity, remembering with love and pride our grandfathers, mothers, fathers and friends as we prepare to undertake the Mighty Hike on Saturday.

“We have all been training hard over the last 10 months, most having completed over 10 mile treks regularly each weekend and stepping up to 20+ miles on a couple of occasions, trying to break in our boots.”

To date the team has raised around £2,000 from friends, family, clients and its suppliers and colleagues in the foodservice industry.

We did it, gosh that was tough sore as heck (it took 10hrs and finishing around 460th place is good for us), but we will be fine in a day or so, well worth the pain, to support a charity that helps those who regrettably who won’t.

Well done team GastroNorth (The Red hot ( knackered ) chilli steppers !) We smashed it!!
