Deliveroo to launch 30 ‘dark kitchens’ catering for 200 restaurants

Delivery firm Deliveroo is to launch around 30 ‘dark kitchens’ as it looks to roll out its Deliveroo Editions concept around the UK.

The firm hopes to target 10 cities in the country with kitchen-only spaces to cater for around 200 chain and independent restaurants.

The Derliveroo Editions concept has been hailed by its co-founder as the biggest development in the market since the startup launched.

Speaking at the official launch, co-founder Will Shu said he expects the kitchen concept to become a “significant” part of the business.

The new concept brings restaurant food to locations without the need for bricks-and-mortar eateries. It has already been trialled in a number of locations in London under the name RooBox.

It is hoped the ‘dark kitchens’ will help startup restaurants to expand into areas otherwise unreachable,

Shu told City A.M. that he imagines Deliveroo will end up hosting delivery-only restaurants.

The move comes as UberEats and Amazon Restaurant pile increasing pressure onto Deliveroo.
