FEJ AWARDS 2019 PARTNER INTERVIEW: Falcon leverages proud legacy to deliver a modern vision of cooking

Falcon products are among the most respected and trusted in the industry due to an emphasis on improvement and evolution. Having a focused approach allows the company’s in-house marketing and design team to ensure its brands deliver reliable cooking solutions for all types of kitchens, explains managing director Peter McAllister.

Falcon marks 200 years in business this year. How does the organisation plan to mark it?

Everyone at Falcon feels proud to be part of this landmark moment and we’ll be involving our staff and customers in the celebrations. One of the main ways we’ll be commemorating the anniversary is by opening a Customer Experience Centre at our HQ in Stirling, which will celebrate our heritage, showcase our new product development and be a demonstration of what makes Falcon the brand that the industry knows and trusts.

The brand is best known for its cooking appliances and suites, with your Dominator and F900 ranges among the most used in the market. How important is it to have that focused approach in the industry today?

Vitally important – we believe that to be the best at something you have to have a laser-like focus and make sure you are looking to continually challenge and improve yourself. That’s why our product brands like Dominator and F900 are among the most respected and trusted in the industry. We never stop looking at ways to improve our products, and having a focused approach allows our in-house marketing and design team to ensure our brands retain their privileged position as market leaders.

You operate a development kitchen at your HQ. How heavily is that facility used?

The fully-equipped development kitchen, run by Shaune Hall, is the very heart of Falcon — and is central to everything we do as a business. As you can imagine, such a facility is in high demand and there’s hardly a day goes by without a customer either visiting the kitchen or challenging Shaune with a culinary query.

The kitchen, and Shaune’s expertise and knowledge, are available for, and used by, all types of customer, from national accounts with multiple outlets to independents operating a single kitchen. They all know that Shaune is there, ready to assist, and we’re always happy to welcome visitors to the kitchen, and the factory as a whole.

Which sectors have you been the strongest in and are there any new ones you are targeting?

Falcon is synonymous with the Dominator brand and our six-burner range is the benchmark by which others are measured. Historically, Dominator was best-known for its popularity in the public sector, particularly in schools. However, Dominator products can be found across all sectors and in kitchens of all shapes and sizes.

We have a comprehensive range of products to suit all market sectors. For example, our F900 products have proven very popular in the restaurant sector, particularly for front-of-house kitchens. Chieftain continues to be a mainstay within MOD and hospital kitchens and our high performance 400 Series fryers and Dominator Plus chargrills are an integral part of the brewery chain sector.

Falcon also distributes the Lainox combi oven range. What qualities does that add to the portfolio?

As one of the leading manufacturers of combination ovens in the world, Lainox allows us to offer customers the perfect match of horizontal and vertical cooking appliances. The mainstay of the kitchens is, and will remain for some time, horizontal cooking — but combine this with the latest technology, which the Lainox combination ovens deliver, and you really can meet every commercial kitchen’s needs.

You gained a training and development award from CESA last year. What does that say about the business?

Our people are key to our business and we are committed to providing development opportunities. It was fantastic to win the CESA award last year and reward for all the hard work and endeavour shown by the entire team at Falcon, none more so than the accounts and customer service teams led by our finance director Karen Wallace. We have an environment where training and personal development are seen as the norm.

Falcon is at the heart of British manufacturing. Does that carry extra significance given all what is going on with Brexit?

Of course it does. We’re proud to have been a part of British manufacturing for 200 years.  Like most businesses we’ve been working on contingency planning for various Brexit eventualities. We’ve increased our stock levels of many of our products and hold stock in multiple locations to ensure we can continue to deliver the products our customers need, when and where they want it. We are able to supply our customers quickly, due to our flexible and responsive workforce and we’re less affected by the vagaries of the exchange rates as our supply chain is made up of many local and national companies.

We can hold stock and spares for next-day delivery and offer a service that manufacturers from further afield will find hard to match. All of which means we can offer our UK partners and customers security of supply and a truly Great British service.
