Fully-equipped catering pod inspired by changing hot food needs of hospitals

The Pod by Peabodys

A beverage provider to the healthcare sector has launched a catering pod for hospitals and universities that don’t want a full coffee shop installed.

Peabodys Coffee says its new concept, which is called ‘The Pod by Peabodys’, can be set up within 24 hours.

It is a completely self-contained, compact pod specifically designed with new pandemic safety measures.

The pod is set up with strict social distancing rules, with people queuing two metres apart from one another, and a designated order point and a pick-up point.

There is a built-in menu, and customers tell the staff their choice in safety, behind a glass screen. There is also a built-in sanitising area with hand gel to use before and after a visit.

The pod, which just requires an electricity feed, is equipped with an espresso machine, grinder, boiler, Menumaster Xpress high-speed oven, undercounter fridge and freezer, ice maker, blenders, soup kettle, refrigerated display cabinet, utensil sink, EPOS system and hand sink.

Indoor and outdoor pods are available and both are characterised by a sleek, authentic Italian feel, featuring unique designs from award-winning Italian architects, Modourbano.

The indoor pods are made in the UK using natural wood and steel, and the outdoor versions have been based around a framework of a shipping container.

Peabodys said that 24-hour high quality hot food vending machines are being launched alongside The Pod, which enables staff access to warm, nutritious meals around the clock.

Claudia Mascino, director of Peabodys Coffee, said: “The idea for ‘The Pod by Peabodys’ came about because we identified a need in hospitals of safe coffee-break points with 24 hours hot food and hot drinks provision.

“I’m proud that we’ve come up with this concept that follows all the social distancing measures without looking too clinical. And I love the fact that it can be put up quickly in 24 hours and dismantled speedily as well. It’s temporary when it needs to be, but durable when it needs to be too. It’s what is needed right now.”

Peabodys has been running an array of artisan coffee shops that have been serving organic Fairtrade coffee and freshly prepared food for over 20 years.
