Greggs is on a sausage roll when it comes to shop opening projects

Greggs opened four stores for every one that it closed last year as the company finished 2021 with almost 2,200 sites.

During the year it launched 131 new shops, including 50 franchised units, and closed 28.

As of 1 January 2022, it operated 2,181 shops, with 375 of those managed by franchise partners.

Its delivery service, in association with Just Eat, is now available from 1,000 Greggs shops.

Greggs generated sales of £1.2 billion last year, a 5% increase on 2019 figures. Two-year like-for-like sales in company-managed shops were down 3%, however.

Greggs ended 2021 with a “strong” cash position of £198m, which it says will strengthen its ambitions to accelerate the rate of growth in its shop estate while developing new digital channels and extending the trading day.

It said it has a “strong pipeline” of new shop opportunities and expects to open around 150 net new stores in the year ahead.

“While conditions in the first few months of 2022 are likely to remain challenging, we are confident that we are well-placed to make progress on the many attractive opportunities that lie ahead,” said CEO Roger Whiteside.

Mr Whiteside is stepping down from his position later this year to retire and will be replaced by retail and property director Roisin Currie.
