Greggs sees instant payback on huge roll-out of heated cabinets

A huge roll-out of food cabinets is paying dividends for Greggs after it reported growing demand for hot food at different parts of the day.

As revealed by FEJ back in March, the chain has been splashing out on new catering equipment to increase hot food options for customers, particularly during times of the day when there is less demand for sweet goods.

CEO Roger Whiteside said this morning that the heated cabinets were already boosting early morning sales by allowing it to make its hot breakfast boxes available in more shops.

Greggs is also continuing to develop its offer for later in the day. Its focaccia-style pizzas are growing in popularity, supported by its post-4pm pizza deal of a pizza slice and a drink for just £2.

Mr Whiteside said: “Hot food options are also being developed with the roll-out of hot food cabinets supporting growing sales of new lines alongside our existing hot sandwich range. Trials of extended late opening hours will follow in the autumn.”

The 2,000-strong chain has famously begun opening drive-thrus to expand its reach and has expanded its ‘click & collect’ pilot to seven cities.

It has also extended trials of delivery options to include Just Eat alongside its existing partnership with Deliveroo.

“These trials are providing valuable learning around the operational approach that must be adopted to ensure that customers receive a great service, however they shop with Greggs,” added Mr Whiteside.
