Industry representative calls for clarity on Apprenticeship Levy

A group representing casual dining restaurants and pubs is lobbying for the government to provide guidance and clarity for businesses affected by the recently introduced Apprenticeship Levy scheme.

The ALMR will also be working with its members to provide support and will be launching a training solution, the ALMR Diploma, later this year.

The Apprenticeship Levy, now in force, will be applicable to all employers with a pay bill in excess of £3 million per year.

“It is disappointing that the government did not delay the introduction of the levy as there is still a fair bit of uncertainty regarding standards, practice and access to funds,” said ALMR chief executive Kate Nicholls.

“The ALMR had pushed for a delay in its implementation but that has not been forthcoming. The government now needs to make clarification a top priority so that those businesses that are paying into the levy understand its function and can begin to access the benefits.

“We will be working closely with our members to ensure that they understand the requirements and benefits of the scheme. The ALMR has been working closely with CPL Training, HIT Training, Remit Training and the BIIAB to produce the ALMR Diploma, a training solution to help retailers manage and navigate their way through the Apprenticeship Levy and maximise returns.

“In the meantime, the government needs to work to provide clarification and guidance for businesses to ensure that they are not disadvantaged by a scheme that is supposed to support them.”
