Internorga organisers settle on June for rescheduled show

The organisers of Internorga have said the show will be rescheduled for June following its recent postponement.

The event was due to run from 13-17 March, but was called off last week amid growing concern about the spread of coronavirus.

Despite doubts over how easy it would be to find a new date in an already packed industry trade show calendar, Hamburg Messe und Congress has settled on 20-24 June.

“Identifying a suitable timeframe in summer was a major challenge for us. We wanted to avoid any collision with German school holidays,” said Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress.

“We were successful – almost, that is: none of Germany’s 16 states will be on school holidays at the beginning of Internorga. However, holidays in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania will begin while the trade fair is in progress.”

There is a slight change from the original schedule, in that the show will now begin on a Saturday and end on a Wednesday.

“We are relieved that this new timeframe is possible,” added Mr Aufderheide. “Together with our exhibitors we will stage an Internorga exhibition at the new dates that will live up to the high standards our audience has become accustomed to.”

Meanwhile, the Alimentaria and Hostelco trade shows in Spain, which were initially scheduled for 20-23 April, have been moved to September.

The two trade shows jointly comprise one of the largest international platforms for the food, gastronomy and catering equipment industry, with more than 4,500 exhibitors from 70 countries and 150,000 visitors.

Both will now run from 14-17 September in Barcelona instead.

Constantí Serrallonga, general manager at Fira de Barcelona, said: “Although the hired space is practically full, we’ve reached this decision following an in-depth assessment of the situation and after listening to the sector, whose support we appreciate, with the aim of guaranteeing the smooth running of such an important international event, after finding suitable alternative dates in our trade fair calendar.”
