Internorga scraps plans for physical trade show in 2021

International foodservice trade show Internorga has axed plans for a physical event in 2021 due to rising coronavirus cases in Germany.

Organisers had intended to run the event on 12-16 March next year in Hamburg after the 2020 version was initially rescheduled for June and then abandoned altogether.

With new lockdowns across Europe and uncertainty over further restrictions, organisers said that “reliable planning” of a physical trade show was impossible.

They are now exploring the viability of holding a digital event instead.

Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO at Hamburg Messe und Congress, said: “The fact that we have had to make this decision for the second time in one year is very painful for us all, especially since the whole Internorga team had already put their heart and soul into working hard on suggested positionings, a solid hygiene concept and exciting new subject areas for our visitors.

“But as the saying goes, every crisis hides an opportunity, and we now need to make the most of that together. We are currently investigating whether a digital Internorga, which even under the current conditions would offer the opportunity for personal interaction and the discovery of new trends and innovations, is sensible and viable.”

The announcement comes two weeks after organisers of the UK’s HRC Show, which was also scheduled for March 2021, said it would not be able to go ahead due to a lack of clarity from the government over when large-scale business events could restart.

Internorga has served as a show for the hotel, restaurant, bakery and confectionery industries for the best part of a century.
