TGI Fridays celebrates 30 years in the UK market this year and business is as buoyant as it has ever been.
The opening of the first ever branch on Birmingham’s Hagley Road in 1986 seems a lifetime ago now — especially since no fewer than 75 restaurants have followed. The firm makes no secret of the fact that the success of the customer experience is down to hiring and retaining enthusiastic front-of-house team members.
Fortunately there is no shortage of willing candidates, with Karen revealing that TGI had received more than 20,000 applications to join the business over the last year, leading it to provide 350 careers. It will add a further 150 faces to that number by the time that all of the six new sites it is adding this year are up and running.
Perhaps the most eye-catching development of the past year, though, is the launch of a 320-cover site in Leicester Square, complete with glitzy open kitchen.
The battle for wallet share in the casual dining space is won as much by what happens outside the kitchen as inside it these days, as Karen testifies: “A key part of our strategy is increasing engagement with new and existing guests. As part of this, we are aiming to make our digital offering as compelling as our in-restaurant experience.”
