MARKET TALK: The future of NHS catering, reconfiguring hospital kitchens and beating equipment breakdowns

In this week’s episode of Market Talk, Philip Shelley, soft FM operational management at NHS Improvement and past chair of the Hospital Caterers Association, and Steve Buckmaster, director of sales UK at BRITA Professional, join us to reflect on the hot kitchen topics of the day.

Mr Shelley has spent his career in facilities management and healthcare catering environments and has just chaired an extensive review into hospital food. Millions of NHS patients and staff are set to benefit from the blueprint, which sets out how kitchen infrastructure and menus will need to evolve in the future.

Mr Shelley explains the vital role that suppliers have to play in ensuring that hospital kitchens are equipped to provide a 24/7, and how the equipment world and technology world are on course to collide as the digitisation of menus and food ordering systems increase.

Meanwhile, Mr Buckmaster provides an insight to research that BRITA Professional has carried out into preventative maintenance. He discusses the results of the ‘Beat the Breakdown’ survey, including the significance of 30% of kitchen workers admitting they are more cautious about equipment costs than ever before.

Additionally, Mr Buckmaster outlines how BRITA is preparing for 2021 and how its product sales have been impacted by opening and closing of restaurants as government restrictions have been enforced on the industry.
