Pub chain Marston’s confirmed today that it has received an “unsolicited” takeover approach from US private equity firm Platinum Equity.
Marston’s Board will evaluate the proposal with its advisers and make a further announcement in due course.
The company issued a statement on the matter this morning following press speculation about the potential of a buyout.
“There can be no certainty that any firm offer will be made for the company, nor as to the terms on which any firm offer might be made,” Marston’s said in the statement.
Marston’s runs more than 1,400 pubs across the UK, including 156 that it took over from Welsh brewer S.A. Brain in December.
Appetite for transactional activity in the pub sector is predicted to rise this year, with analysts expecting demand for community-based operations and pubs based in rural and coastal locations to be popular.
