Morrisons is to open the first UK chain of supermarket takeaways by launching a hot food-to-go service in all 402 of its cafés nationwide.

Customers will be able to choose from a range of affordable takeaway meals, including breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner options from as little as £1.95.

Morrisons said the launch will make it the UK’s largest fish and chips takeaway selling two million portions-a-year.

Its fish and chips dish with bread and butter will be available on promotion at only £10 for two portions.

All items on the menu will be prepared in Morrisons cafés and packaged in new cardboard takeaway boxes.

Marianne Jones, head of café operations at Morrisons, said: “Our customers love our cafes. Some dine with us a number of times a week and many have told us they’ve been waiting for their return. So we’ve been working behind the scenes to bring back some of our most popular dishes at great prices as we continue to feed the nation.”

Due to essential social distancing measures in the cafés, customers will have to order their takeaway by calling the supermarket’s national takeaway hotline number.

They will be asked to give their postcode, select their local store, and will then be transferred to their store’s café team who will take their order.

Alternatively customers can visit the cafe when in store to place their order.

All meals will be ready for collection within 30 minutes of the order being placed. Deliveroo is also available in some locations.
