A new online service for care home food deliveries has been set up by a distributors’ network.
www.food2care.co.uk has been launched by the Federation of Wholesale Distributors in partnership with the Cabinet Office, as a response to reports of care home owners’ concerns about food availability from supermarkets, and the increased risk of introducing Covid-19 into their residential premises if kitchen staff have to make regular shopping trips.
FWD chief executive James Bielby said: “There’s no reason for care home owners to be buying their food and household items from supermarkets. There has always been a better alternative, and under the current circumstances it’s more important than ever to have a reliable and experienced supply partner bringing food to your door.
“Foodservice wholesalers know the product and menu requirements care homes have, and they work every day with the manufacturers to meet the needs of residents with health issues such as dysphagia. They can help design meals and menus, and they know what other similar businesses are buying. They have temperature-controlled delivery vehicles and online ordering platforms, or experienced telephone sales teams if you prefer.
“Catering packs are larger than supermarket ones and come with nutritional and allergen information. Distributors can provide advice and government guidance on food storage and preparation – everything care homes need to keep the fridges full and their residents and teams fed.”
By entering their postcode into the site’s search facility care home operators are able to find specialist catering supplies working in the area.
The distributors listed already work with care professionals and have capacity in their delivery fleets as their hospitality customers, including restaurants, pubs and hotels, are currently closed.
A spokesperson for the Care Provider Alliance said: “We’re delighted that the Federation of Wholesale Distributors is supporting care providers struggling to get access to food supplies.”
www.food2care.co.uk has been set up by FWD with Foodservice Online and iWeb. More than 70 national and regional distributors are taking part in the scheme.
