Andy McCue might have been the former chief executive of Paddy Power, but The Restaurant Group’s board of directors evidently didn’t view him as a gamble when they gave him the job of turning the business around midway through last year.
Andy has certainly made his mark on the 500-strong restaurant enterprise since taking the helm, leading the implementation of a new operating strategy and overseeing a comprehensive review of the business designed to preserve its profits and return it to growth.
Although its latest figures, for the last six months, reveal a squeeze on sales and EBITDA, there are early signs of improved volume momentum across the group, which counts Frankie & Benny’s and Chiquito among its key brands.
Andy is certainly putting the emphasis on TRG’s kitchen development team to deliver the goods, with a revamped core menu, improved kids’ offering and a capital refresh of its stores helping to win back lapsed customers at Frankie & Benny’s, which still accounts for more than half of its sites.
“Our Leisure customers are enjoying a better value, higher quality product; our growth plans for our Pubs and Concessions businesses are advancing well and we have made good progress in delivering cost efficiencies,” he comments.
