Duncan Garrood has just stepped down from Bill’s Restaurants to embark on a new venture, but he’s had a busy year in the hotseat.
By his own admission, he had to make some tough decisions when he took over the job following the sudden departure of Mark Fox at the start of this year.
But while senior management changes can create uncertainty among staff as they work out what the future might hold, Duncan’s positive and practical leadership approach has brought stability to the business and inspired the team to new heights.
The transformation of its flagship London store in under a fortnight, including the introduction of new decor, menu and service, perfectly illustrated the level of focus evident in the business, with Duncan heaping praise on staff for their dedication and execution.
Overhauls of other key sites have also been delivered at break-neck speed and reinforced Bill’s commitment to investing in its estate to remain relevant in a rapidly changing market place.
Duncan’s track record at Punch Taverns, where he masterminded the turnaround and sale of the business to Heineken, convinced the Bill’s board they had got the right man, and as the chain embarks on its ambitious plans to grow the business beyond the 80 sites it already owns, they will feel even more confident that its future is in safe hands.
