POWER LIST 2019, BUSINESS LEADERS: Chaker Hanna, Chairman, Comptoir Group

Comptoir Libanais

A consistent, differentiated offering has helped set Comptoir Group apart from operators that have fallen victim to the turbulent times engulfing the high street dining sector.

Chaker Hanna’s leadership style has had much to do with that as the company has avoided getting drawn into the store opening war and instead focused on sustainable growth.

Indeed, the 23-strong group is likely to end the year with only a single new opening this year, but it has carried out some significant refurbishments and reopened its Westfield Shepherd’s Bush store well ahead of schedule.

Perhaps most significantly, the Lebanese and Mediterranean chain has realised that franchise agreements could offer the best route to profitable growth.

Recent deals with franchise partner HMS Host involving sites in Ashford and Abu Dhabi and Dubai airports should see it end 2019 with six franchised operations.

With a balance of £3.4m in the bank at the end of June, the group is well-placed to acquire new sites through internally-generated cash if it wishes to.

But you won’t find Chaker rushing into things for the sake of it: “We remain cautious and committed to only invest in the sites which fit within the attributes associated with our most successful restaurants and that would contribute positively from their first full year of trading.”
