POWER LIST 2019, CHAIN CHAMPIONS: James Spragg, CEO, Casual Dining Group

Bella Italia

When Steve Richards departed Casual Dining Group earlier this year, James Spragg was the obvious candidate to take over and navigate the 280-strong restaurant behemoth through the choppy waters of the midmarket dining sector.

Having previously served in Richards’ executive team as COO, James boasts a thorough understanding of what makes its core brands Bella Italia, Cafe Rouge and Las Iguanas tick.

“He has an intimate understanding of the business, having most recently served as COO, and will bring fresh ideas and energy to the role of CEO,” said CDG chairman Rooney Anand at the time of his appointment.

“Our industry continues to face challenges, however we see a host of exciting opportunities that we believe CDG can capitalise on under James’ seasoned leadership.”

With the group delivering like-for-like sales growth of 3% during the first six months of the year and introducing a flatter leadership structure that has seen divisional managing directors replaced by brand directors, James – who has also worked for Pizza Express, TGI Fridays and Whitbread – will be confident the business can continue taking proactive steps to avoid the wholesale restructuring that has been forced upon some of its rivals.
