POWER LIST 2019, MARKET MOVERS: Hannah McKay, UK Head of Food, Caffe Nero

Caffe Nero

In a market sector where Costa and Starbucks hold such sway, it can be easy to forget just how potent Caffe Nero is.

The business that majority shareholder Gerry Ford founded in 1997 now employs more than 8,000 staff across over 1,000 stores in 11 countries. Some 667 of those shops are in the UK.

Indeed, the company typically opens a new store somewhere in the world every four days and is forecast to create 1,000 new jobs in the UK during the next four years if it stays on track with its new shop opening objectives.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying that the work carried out by Hannah McKay and her team has a far-reaching impact.

Although the chain is naturally revered for its coffee offering, it is well aware that the secret to success in a competitive market place lies in ongoing F&B innovation, especially on the food side.

The most recent revamp of the menu has seen it create a raft of grab-and-go delights, including mini pizzas and paprika and pork crackling sausage rolls that rock the ‘homemade’ look.

With each item in the new menu costing less than £5.50, the company is confident that its latest creations are well-positioned to win market share from lunchtime rivals.

Caffe Nero’s food journey has seen the chain undertake a significant project assessing the cooking platforms that can best deliver its hot food offering.
