Uckfield-based catering equipment specialist, Mitchell & Cooper, has secured a £250,000 loan from HSBC UK to expand its product range in its 140th year.
Established in 1879, Mitchell & Cooper has evolved to become a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of catering equipment, including can openers, food portioners, spirit dispensers, bar accessories and cup dispensers, carrying the renowned ‘Bonzer’ trademark.
Among the new products is its specialist appliance, Crustastun, a humane crustacean stunning machine.
Developed as an alternative to traditional methods of preparing lobster, crayfish and crab, the Crustastun is recognised by a number of leading welfare groups, including the RSPCA, as the only humane method of stunning crustaceans ready for cooking.
Guy Cooper, managing director of Mitchell & Cooper, said: “As we celebrate our 140th anniversary, we’re thrilled to increase our footprint in the foodservice industry, with the development of new and exciting products like the Crustastun.
“The bank’s funding has been instrumental in helping us to complete the product design and bring it to market, enhancing our product range and creating a unique appliance in response to increased demand.”
With new and existing product development plans underway and a need to update its IT system to improve internal processes, the funding from HSBC UK has come at an important time for the business.
Sarah Milligan, HSBC UK’s area director in East Sussex, said: “As a leading manufacturer of catering and bar equipment in the UK, Mitchell & Cooper demonstrates true pioneering spirit and determination to continually evolve and expand its business. The development of Crustastan has come during a historic year for Mitchell & Cooper and is a major milestone for them, marking the start of an exciting growth journey ahead.”
The deal was part of HSBC UK’s £14 billion lending fund to support SMEs in the UK, with £250m committed to businesses in East Sussex.
